Rubik's Cube Scramble Generator
Pick a puzzle, generate a scramble, and apply it with white on top and green in front, the standard orientation for WCA scrambles. Generate 5 or 12 at once when you want a full average, then copy the list.

How the scrambles are built
Each scramble is a sequence of random face turns that never repeats or cancels a move on the same axis, so you will not see sequences like R R' or R L R. 3x3 scrambles are 20 moves, 2x2 scrambles use R, U, and F turns, and the 4x4 and 5x5 scrambles add wide moves such as Rw and Uw.
Randomness comes from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every scramble is independent of the last one.
How to read scramble notation
A letter on its own (R, U, F, L, D, B) means turn that face 90 degrees clockwise as if you were looking straight at it. A prime mark (R') means counterclockwise, and a 2 (R2) means a half turn. A w (Rw) means turn the outer two layers together.
Hold the cube in the same orientation for the whole scramble. If you lose your place, start from a solved cube and apply a new scramble instead of guessing: a solve from an unknown state makes your time and any analysis less meaningful.
Using scrambles for better practice
For averages, use a fresh scramble for every solve and keep the same inspection routine each time. For cross practice, generate a scramble, plan the whole cross during inspection, then solve only the cross and check whether your plan worked.
Resist skipping scrambles that give an awkward F2L or an unfamiliar last layer. Those cases are exactly what an average is supposed to measure.
Want to know why a solve was slow?
In the CuberPal iOS app, every timer solve comes with a fresh scramble, WCA-style inspection, and averages, and you can record a solve for AI analysis of where the time went.
Frequently asked questions
How many moves is a 3x3 scramble?
This generator produces 20-move 3x3 scrambles. Official WCA 3x3 scrambles are computed differently, from a random cube state, and their length varies but is usually close to 20 moves.
Are these official WCA scrambles?
No. WCA competitions use scrambles from the official WCA scrambling program, which picks a uniformly random cube state. These random-move scrambles are well mixed and suitable for practice, but they are not official competition scrambles.
Which way should I hold the cube while scrambling?
The WCA convention is white on top and green in front. Keep that orientation for the whole scramble and do not rotate the cube between moves.
What does Rw mean in a 4x4 scramble?
Rw is a wide move: turn the right face and the inner layer next to it together, 90 degrees clockwise. Rw' turns them counterclockwise, and Rw2 is a half turn.
