How to use the timer

Apply the scramble shown above the timer with your preferred colour on top and front. Hold the spacebar until the display turns green, then release to start. Any key stops the timer on desktop; on a phone or tablet, tap anywhere on the timer area.

Turn on inspection when you want competition-style practice. The first press starts a 15-second countdown for planning your cross, and the second hold-and-release starts the solve. Under WCA rules, starting after 15 seconds adds two seconds and starting after 17 seconds is a DNF, and this timer applies the same penalties automatically.

Reading your averages

An ao5 is the average of your last five solves with the best and worst removed, the same format used for most events at WCA competitions. The ao12 and ao100 trim the best and worst 5% of results (one each for ao12, five each for ao100) so one lucky or disastrous solve does not dominate the number.

A single DNF can be dropped as the worst result, but a second DNF inside an ao5 makes the whole average DNF. Use the +2 and DNF buttons on each solve to record mistakes honestly so the averages stay comparable over time.

Make each session count

Timing random solves shows where you are; it does not show why. After a session, look for the phase that feels slowest, usually cross planning, F2L pauses, or last-layer recognition, and practise that phase in isolation before timing again.

Start a fresh session when you change something meaningful, such as a new cube, a new method step, or a new time of day, so you can compare averages fairly.

Want to know why a solve was slow?

The CuberPal iOS app keeps the same timer, adds AI analysis of recorded solves to show whether cross, F2L, or last layer is costing you time, so each session ends with a clear next thing to practise.

Frequently asked questions

Is this online cube timer free?

Yes. The timer, scrambles, inspection, penalties, and averages are free and run in your browser with no account. Solves are saved only in this browser, so clearing site data removes them.

How do I start the timer on a phone?

Press and hold the large timer area until it turns green, then lift your finger to start. Tap anywhere on the timer area to stop.

How is ao5 calculated?

Take your last five results, remove the fastest and the slowest, and average the remaining three. A +2 counts as the time plus two seconds, and a DNF counts as the slowest possible result.

What does the 15-second inspection do?

It mirrors WCA inspection: you get 15 seconds to look at the cube before starting. Starting between 15 and 17 seconds adds a +2 penalty, and waiting longer than 17 seconds results in a DNF.

Are these the same scrambles used in WCA competitions?

No. Competitions use official scrambles generated by the WCA scrambling program. This timer uses random-move scrambles that follow the same notation and are suitable for everyday practice.
